On the 12th of January, a major 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the impoverished nation of Haiti. This was followed by an aftershock measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale which caused further widespread damage. The epicenter was near the capital of Port-au-Prince.

According to the BBC, estimates of the number who have died in Haiti range from 100,000 to 200,000.

In response to this crisis, the Global Aid Network (GAiN) is already at work pulling together Emergency Response packages. These kits contain water purification tablets, food items – like rice, beans, canned meat and fish – cooking oil and personal hygiene supplies. They are similar to the ones GAiN has provided Haiti in the past.

For less than £75, you can feed a Haitian family of six for a week and provide them with basic essentials necessary for survival. That’s less than 60p per meal. These kits will be distributed through local churches and other dedicated and compassionate in-country partners.

Let us lift up Haiti and this tragic situation to the Lord in prayer too:

• Pray that Haitians would be able to cope with the aftermath of the earthquake, that they would know God’s peace and love. Ask the Lord to comfort those who have lost everything.
• Pray for the government as they respond – for wisdom, strength and guidance on how to best use their time and resources.
• Pray for rescuers, for their safety and for protection from depression and exhaustion, particularly as they retrieve the dead. Pray also that survivors are reached quickly.
• Pray for Christians in Haiti – pray that they would keep their eyes fixed on Jesus despite this disastrous situation. Pray for them that they would be able to trust that God is still sovereign and is in control. Pray also for Christians to be shining witnesses for Christ in these terrible circumstances.
• Pray for people to give sacrificially towards the relief effort.
• Pray for protection against looting and crime and that Haitians would work graciously together in the aftermath of the earthquake.
