Student Leaders

"Agapé Student Life is committed to the audacious principle of student leadership - the belief that students are best placed to make Jesus known at their own universities. Throughout history, wherever students have stepped up to lead the effects have been powerful, creative and contagious. Our job as Agapé staff is to be experts in spotting and developing potential, helping equip students to lead. We want to inspire student leaders that God wants to use them to make a difference at their universities and in the lives of their peers." (Andy Atkins, Agapé UK)

Below you'll find a bit of information about the Student Leaders in Glasgow.

Andy Hayes
Strathclyde University

Andy is a second year engineering student at Strathclyde University. He explains: "I was impressed by Student Life's vision for building relationships and discipleship on campus. Our outreach should could from a love for our fellow students and one of the best ways to show God’s love is to be there for people and to listen to them. I’ve met loads of people though Student Life and I’m looking forward to continuing to getting to know them all and others. Student Life is just starting in Glasgow so just now we’re building foundations. We’ve been getting to know lots of people, getting to know Glasgow and the way its students think and react. This involves lots of coffee!"

Ben Dodds
Glasgow University

Ben is our Northern Irish ambassador here in Scotland, currently in his first year studying Civil Engineering at the University of Glasgow. It was Andy Hayes in the form of a goat that first caught his attention about Student Life in the Goat vs. iPod freshers competition. He says: “I wouldn’t normally have seen it as my calling to be involved with student ministry as I often feel a stronger calling to other things, like working with the homeless here in Glasgow, but God has placed me amongst thousands of people that don’t yet know God's love and grace. I see it as really important to know how to effectively share the good news of Jesus with them. Student Life has already strengthened me so much in this area and challenged me to get out of my comfort zone. I would love to get to the point where we as a group can share the good news of Jesus no matter where or who we’re sitting amongst!”

Stephen Hamilton
Glasgow University

Stephen is a first year aeronautical engineering student from Aberdeenshire. He says: “I didn't expect to get involved in anything like Student Life before coming to university but after a few weeks in Glasgow I realised that the work the group were doing around campus was exactly what my faith needed. It helps me work out what I believe by speaking to fellow students about life and listening to their opinions on God. I felt God calling me to become more deeply involved with one of the Christian groups on campus and I just want to spread his amazing news in the most effective way. I feel that Student Life is a great way for me to do this because what better way is there than just having a face to face chat with other students. I feel privileged to be part of what God is doing in Glasgow and am really excited about the way Student Life is growing as a movement of both Christians and non-christians.”

Lucy Davies
Glasgow University

Lucy is in first year studying Biomedical Sciences at Glasgow University. "What attracted me to Student Life was that it gave to me opportunities to develop conversations with students about faith and what they think of God and Jesus. I’ve come to realise that for me it's about listening to what students have to say and with some of those we meet, developing great friendships. It's about giving as many students as possible an opportunity to speak about what they think and believe in an environment where no-one is judged, but everyone is just up for making sense of life and this world. Since joining Student Life I have grown in confidence and have a stronger passion to just be completely natural and honest with talking about my relationship with God and what He means to me. It's also pretty awesome and inspiring being part of a wee group sharing the vision of Student Life and growing as a team of leaders. I’m pretty excited to how God’s going to use us and what he’s going to do with this wee society in the coming years.“
