Phil Jackman,
Director of the Agapé Workplace Initiative in Birmingham has teamed
up with Daniel Win of Global Aid Network to build a fast and efficient
supply line to 10,000 people living in the Irrawaddy Delta.
Phil met Daniel
in the Autumn, and was impressed with all the projects he was running
along the Thai-Burma border. Five days after Cyclone Nargis hit,
he had a call asking for help. As a Burmese national, Daniel had
already been given Government permission to send in ten two-person
research teams. He knows people all over Burma, and has a relational
network that extends right down to village level.
There is an urgent
need for food, water and medicine. Mass dehydration is evident as
the water is now contaminated with the dead. Many of the locals
are now suffering with diarrhoea indicating food contamination.
Our volunteer staff are suffering from the smell and requesting
masks and boots.
"Logistics seems
to be the main problem", says Daniel. "Army distribution is slow
and has limited capacity. We must empower the local people. They
are stepping up to the plate on this one". GAiN is distributing
dry noodles. But each volunteer can carry only limited supplies.
At the moment, they have to travel on foot. Volunteers have requested
motorbikes and boats to make the trip easier and quicker.
"We are very privileged
to have partners on the ground who have free access to come and
go in the disaster area. But we desperately need more money. When
people are dying every day through malnutrition and disease, you
don't save money for a rainy day - you spend it as soon as it arrives."
