Find companions

By Larry Platner

Day 19

Then I went up in the night by the valley and inspected the wall, and I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned. 16 And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, and I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, and the rest who were to do the work. 16 Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” 18 And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, “Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work. ESV

Nehemiah dreamed of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem, a task that would require many. Having surveyed the wall he calls the people together and shares his vision with them. Together they fulfilled Nehemiah’s dream. The benefit for Nehemiah was not only having enough workers to complete the task but also companions who shared his dream.

Living a dream that involves significant change or navigating an unexpected change in life is hard on your own. On your own the tendency is for a dream to slowly die due to lack of confidence, attention, time or business. For unexpected changes it is hard to journey well through them on your own. Find companions to share your dreams and challenges with, companions who love God’s word, will pray with you, speak honestly, believe the best in you and who see the world differently and thus able to show a new perspective.

God never expects us to walk alone. We are part of a people of God and we are to encourage one another. It is not a burden on others to share your burdens but an opportunity for them to be the loving, caring people God has called us all to be.

Who do you have in your life with whom you can share your dreams, challenges and struggles with?
