In 1885, seven British graduates together determined to set aside their promising careers for the sake of a dangerous, obscure life in a land they had never seen. They transformed the world by going overseas with the gospel, seeing hundreds of others follow in their footsteps. But they had not begun the revolution; they were standing on the shoulders of giants.
Thirty years earlier, Hudson Taylor had set the beacon burning through going overseas to help others to discover Jesus. Taylor himself had the fire lit in him by the Plymouth Brethren. The story can be traced back 2000 years to a man standing on a hillside giving his disciples a Great Commission, before going to prepare a place for them to spend eternity. We follow in their footsteps.
Today, individuals and people groups who were unknown to the world in the 1880s are now accessible in a few hours. We, who have passports that provide more access than most, currency that is easily exchanged, and a spiritual heritage to share, have this opportunity to go global and transform lives around the world as we inspire people to discover Jesus.
Opportunities with Agapé UK
Agapé UK (as part of Campus Crusade for Christ International) is active in 196 countries. Our overseas staff are currently serving in:
- the Middle East
- South Africa
…and we have opportunities to send to many more locations around the world.
An overseas assignment with us could be short-term (for 1-2 years) or long-term (3+ years). You would be working either with a local Agapé team, to provide fresh energy and capacity; or with a team of sent staff from the UK, to start up something new in a city with no Agapé presence.
Our goal is always to help build indigenous movements that will enable many people to discover Jesus for themselves. Each movement around the world grows uniquely. We have seen God use short-term international staff (STINTers) and long-term global staff to play a part in launching movements led by national staff, students, and volunteers, who then continue the cycle by sending staff to other nations.
The two main ways we send staff are:
1. STINT (Short-Term International Staff)
STINTers are sent to invest one or two years to launch a new movement, or provide fresh capacity and energy in an existing team of global and/or national staff.
2. Global Staff
Global Staff are those who will dig in, launch movements and run before and/or alongside nationals on multicultural teams for three years or longer.
What sort of training will I receive?
Our overseas training falls into four broad categories:
- Love God
- Love your neighbour
- Learn a new world
- Launch movements.
Additionally, every team will intentionally pursue the following:
- Praying for and developing a heart for people who don’t know Jesus
- Cultivating a daily, consistent relationship with the Lord
- Discovering God’s heart for diverse people groups and their cultures
- Completing a personal and ministry development plan
- Sharing the gospel in a culturally relevant way
- Practising how to share your personal faith story
- Exercising servant-leadership and adaptability to become an effective cross-cultural worker
- Learning the practice of the Spirit-filled life and how to share it with others.
OK, I’m interested. What next?
